PFAS-free antifouling coating that keeps bacteria from adhering to medical devices

Introduction

The LipoCoat® PFAS-free antifouling coating offers a passive approach to infection prevention. Inspired by the natural phospholipid bilayer membrane found in mammalian cells, our design prevents bacteria from adhering to device surfaces without the need for harmful chemicals or bacteria-killing agents.
PFAS-Free Antifouling Coating for Healthcare Devices Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) often stem from medical devices, leading to increased patient morbidity and mortality, as well as significant financial strain on healthcare systems. The growing presence of resistant micro-organisms poses a substantial challenge in treating HAIs effectively. Common pathogens linked to HAIs include Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The demand for safe, effective anti-bacterial coatings has been on the rise; however, most existing solutions rely on antibiotics or active bacterial-killing agents, which can pose risks to patients. Antifouling coatings offer a critical advantage in reducing infection and contamination risks. In healthcare settings, these coatings are used on a range of devices, such as catheters, implants, and wound dressings. By preventing bacterial growth, they help minimize infection risks and related complications during medical procedures. However, conventional anti-bacterial coatings present challenges, including the risk of bacteria developing resistance, diminishing their effectiveness over time. Additionally, some coatings contain harmful chemicals, posing potential risks to both human health and the environment. Lipocoat Group is committed to reducing HAIs while enhancing comfort and functionality in medical devices. Our PFAS-free coating offers a passive approach to infection prevention. Inspired by the natural phospholipid bilayer membrane found in mammalian cells, our design prevents bacteria from adhering to device surfaces without the need for harmful chemicals or bacteria-killing agents. This innovative, PFAS-free coating blocks biofilm formation, helping to prevent HAIs and their associated complications safely and effectively.
